So sorry for the delay in posting the update (and you'll notice the pictures are still pending ... I'll get them up soon.).  It's a long story which I will not discuss.  Let's just say Christine enjoyed her Saison Duponts on draft.  All three of them.  And the Oberon.  And the good beers Hart selected.  Sometimes a girl's gotta blow off some steam.  Anyway, I hope you all had as much fun as I did Wednesday night.  Thanks to Calvin for being our halftime entertainment.  Pretty daring, as it was his first time at one of our tastings.  For info on his family's farm, visit www.mcconnellsfarm.com.  Peaches are in season!  Also, thanks for your generous contributions in supporting Lisa's efforts to benefit the American Cancer Society.  She's running in the Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon on Sunday, August 1st.  And what's up with the comments about Genessee?

June 2, 2010

There's always excitement in the air at the Pittsburgh BrewMasters Homebrew Challenge!  Thanks to Hart for organizing the challenge and to Pittsburgh BrewMasters members Dick Smith, Jim Stein, Jon Volkwein and Hart (again) Johnson for crafting the beer for our event!  Congratulations to Jon!  His was the only beer to win its pairing.  But look how close the results were!  Good job gentlemen!  It appears our group preferred the porter style and were not big fans of the Belgian pale ale style.  And it's interesting how the individual pairings ranked too ... #1 American Porter, #2 Pilsner, #3 American Amber Ale, #4 Belgian Pale Ale.

Congratulations to Denny on his retirement last week.  Thanks to his wife Barb for helping us with our surprise roast, and to Dennis and Jon for providing the stories.  Denny, I'll be thinking of you as I'm reading the book Escape from Cubicle Nation.

Thanks to Peter for promoting his group Three Rivers Alliance of Serious Homebrewers (aka TRASH).  You can learn more at www.trashhomebrewers.org.

Congratulations to Rege for winning the 50/50 raffle!  Thanks to the Sharp Edge for hosting our event and for providing the numerous door prizes!  And thanks to Dick Smith for offering up his ticket to the Penn Brewfest.  I'm sure one of the Jeff's will have a great time.

Thanks to Jess and unknown others for taking the photos in Betsy's absence.  (Hope you feel better Bets!)

And last, but certainly not least, thanks to all of you for your continued support.  We couldn't do this without you!

Congratulations Brasseriens!  (Is that a word?)  Last night marked the one year anniversary of the Pittsburgh BrewMasters Brasserie group!  Yay!  And it was the first official sell out of that location.  Double yay!!  Of course, Hart's infinite beer wisdom played a key role.  Who would have thought beer in a can could be so good?  Well, half of them were good (notice how close the top three ratings were).  The other half ... well, it had nothing to do with being in a can.  Sometimes beer is just bad.  Thanks to Kristen for providing a very animated halftime show!  Oh, and yesterday was also the anniversary of the repeal of prohibition.  Triple yay!!!

OK, I'm late again.  But I have a good excuse this time!  I traveled to the hopping town of Harrisburg, PA for a Red Cross seminar about the Service to Armed Forces volunteer work I do.  Learn more at www.swpa.redcross.org.  One of the highlights was a visit to Appalachian Brewing Company (www.abcbrew.com).  The beer's good and the food is excellent!  I also found the neatest little restaurant that's located inside an old fire house from the 1800's.  It's obviously called The Fire House Restaurant (www.thefirehouserestaurant.com).  The food was excellent too, but their beer selection leaves much to be desired.

Anyway, thanks to Jess for making me the halftime entertainment.  That was a fun twist for me, but I hope I didn't bore you all too much.  Betsy was off scuba diving somewhere warm, so we missed her photographic talents.

It's official!  We celebrated our second anniversary last night.  Wow!  How funny it seems to look back and think about how I was worrried that no one would show up for these tastings.  Now, thanks to you, we have almost 400 people in our database.  Pretty cool!

Last night we sampled six of your top 14 favorites from last year.  The others were mostly seasonals that were not available at the time of this tasting.  Click here to see the overall list.  I hope you liked the "blind" tasting and Hart's clues.  I thought it was fun.

Thanks to Julia for being our halftime entertainment.  She was a good sport!  And, by the way, Paul's CD was worth the wait!  My personal favorite track is Ordinary.  If you know me and listen to the lyrics, you'll laugh.  You'll hear Julia on the CD too!  Check out Paul's website at www.lucmusic.com.  The CD is available on iTunes, but you should order the actual disc from Paul's site.  The artistic design is very cool.

Sharp Edge Brasserie
January 6, 2010

Wow, I know.  I'm late in posting this.  Hope you all didn't lose any sleep.  It's been a busy few days.  So we celebrated the Best of the Brasserie with six of the top 15 beers as chosen by you.  Click here to see the list.  The other nine were mostly seasonals that weren't available at the time of this tasting.  Anyway, we missed Betsy taking pictures, so I hope the ones below will do.  Thanks to Ray for being our halftime entertainment.  And thanks to all of you for braving a messy winter night!  Glad you have your priorities straight!
